Ekkehard Altenburger was our visiting artist for the short month of February. Right from the beginning he was interested in laser cutting of larger shapes from steel. Ekkehard already had good technical understanding and skills and he even has his own laser cutter so he was able to begin experimenting fast. As a result, even though it was a short period, he achieved quite a lot. He mostly made sculptures from two laser cut sheets of steel that created an illusion of a 3D form. The illusion works surprisingly well when seen in real life. From laser laboratory’s perspective, especially his tests regarding bent steel sheets were interesting as he tried different methods for bending and the most successful one looks structurally very sound.
Weather was especially pretty for the time of the year, and since we managed to get skis for Ekkehard he got to try skiing which is very popular here. There are ski tracks right next to Lake Saimaa so it’s a good way to experience Finnish nature in winter.
